Unsuspecting citizens going about their lives are suddenly thrown into a volatile situation in which death is the most likely outcome. Golden Plague, the new offering by Ila Monroe, sheds a light on the the frailty of our existence by sculpting one of our biggest fears, contagion, into a visceral nightmare; a nightmare that originates in a place where we seek solace and safety a hospital bed. You won't be able to put this book down!

Golden Plague eBook Ila Monroe

Golden Plague, Ila Monroe's debut novel, is a satisfying, fast-paced read. Monroe writes engaging characters and develops an interesting story that keeps you hooked until the end.
The story follows a series of characters whose lives are intertwined thanks to the MRSA bacteria. Some study it, others want to profit through it, some are afflicted by it. Monroe writes a winning story, and at the same time educates, something that is seldom seen nowadays. In her different settings (the novel takes place in Chicago, London, Cairo, Spain, and Puerto Rico) and her multi-cultural characters, she shows that MRSA infection is a global issue, not particular of only one region.
The novel initially follows Miguel, a humble Puerto Rican kid, who suffers from cystic fibrosis, working at a lab in London. Infected with MRSA, at this same laboratory, his condition becomes precarious. Miguel becomes the motivator for others to bring to justice the greedy perpetrators who intentionally created the contagion.
Interconnected stories bring forth memorable characters like James Penton and Valeria Loperena. James, a Bond-like character, is the British agent who has a personal stake at bringing the villains down in this entertaining read. Valeria, the prototype sexy, intelligent, I-take-no-crap, Puerto Rican woman, is the advertising exec who inadvertently gets caught in the turmoil of greed and suffering created by the perpetrators in this story.
Monroe writes colorful, but scary villains. As a reader you despise them and wish them their due justice. This is the case specially with Sam Cosgrove. It is fair to say he's a deranged mind whose only purpose in life is destruction for destruction's sake. His character is reminiscent of the villains in the recent Batman series, so creepy, you only want to learn his back-story just because he's that appealing.
Monroe's writing style at times can only be described as utterly delightful. Valeria's scenes with her best friend, Mercedes, are full of intense joy, or deep feeling as the need arises within the plot. Monroe makes you feel the moment...the frenzy and excitement in the concert scene...joy and passion in the flamenco scene enjoyed by secondary characters Ana and Paco. There are many moments in the novel that stand out, to name them all would spoil the experience.
I sincerely recommend buying this novel. I was fortunate to read both the Spanish and English versions. The translation to English is EXCELLENT, nothing is lost from the original Spanish version. Fluent in both languages I can say that Monroe's efforts are respected and true to form in the English translation.
I expect great things from this author. And anxiously await the next installment in this series, as it's obvious from the end that it will become a franchise. Get your copy of Golden Plague now, and fall in love with Miguel, Ana, and Paco... With James and Valeria... Detest Josh and Sam, enjoy a whirlwind tour of London, Chicago, Cairo, Spain and San Juan...and be prepared to fully immerse yourself in a topic that's real, that's happening now: MRSA. I commend Monroe on making this subject not only palatable, but fully entertaining. And that's the best way to learn.

Golden Plague eBook Ila Monroe Reviews

I am going to buy it and read it immediately... I know the author...and she is an incredible human being, a deep observer.
Later more thoughts
At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this book with its sci-fi-like premise and microorganisms, until my best friend recommended it. "It's not what you're thinking, you'll see." And I'm glad I listened because I would have missed a book full of realism inflicted in a fictional plot. When I finished the book, I couldn't stop thinking about all the characters. Speaking of characters Valeria and Mercedes are pure spitfire, no-nonsense women who are very successful at what they do. They give us a glimpse of how professional women behave in a business setting where men are the one's calling the shots. Love the way they handle all the curveballs thrown at them. Great role models! And the young character are beautifully written... their young love is so fragile, that it almost broke my heart. And let's not talk about Sam. OMG it's has been a while since I have hated a character so much! Looking forward for more James and the rest of the characters in the future!!
I would never have guessed that a book dealing with germs, hospitals and infections could be so engaging. The author masterfully weaves a great story to let us know the dangers of common bacterial infections in our community. The characters are great; you will fall in love with all of them. You will be rooting for them all the way. They made me cry, made me laugh, made me think. The love story between the young characters is to die for. This book is a non stop reading rollercoaster, so know that once you start, you will be glued to your chair until you are done.
I loved reading this book, it was entertaining and full of suspense!! Can't wait for next one!!!
It's great material for a movie
This novel has it all action, romance, scientific facts and intrigue. Loved the plot, the characters and locations.
James and Valeria rock. Excellent read !
Good product.
Fascinating story based on a real threat that actually exists in hospitals all over the world. Unmasks the concealed interests behind the pharmaceutical companies and the medical business. Things are not black or white, this novel exposes the gray areas in medicine. Few of us doctors have a vocation that keeps us away from the web and illusions of modern medicine. Captivating!!!
